AgriFI Kenya Challenge Fund is a European Union funded initiative which aims to support market integrated smallholder agriculture in Kenya. Launched in 2018, the agribusiness support programme aims to improve the capacity of 100,000 smallholder farmers and pastoralists to practice environmentally sustainable and climate-smart agriculture as a business in inclusive value chains. As the technical implementation partner for the fund, Imani Development is providing technical assistance and operational support on the programme.

Three years into the programme, a series of case studies have been commissioned to extend key lessons and recommendations from review and analysis of AgriFI grantees. They build upon a previous research phase which explored high priority impact areas including gender, youth, nutrition, and climate smart agriculture with a view to supporting effective design, targeting and implementation of the Challenge Fund. These case studies have been compiled by the Imani team to test some of the logic and understanding of that research, illustrating effective strategies, issues of concern, and areas with potential for increasing positive impacts.

This case study series includes the journey of 6 AgriFI Kenya Challenge Fund grantees and the progress they have made since receiving the grant.

This week we explore the challenges and achievements of Lakeview Fisheries as the company implements an out-grower scheme to integrate 1,000+ fish farmers into the aquaculture value chain, with support from AgriFI.
