In July 2020 AgriFI Kenya Challenge Fund (AgriFI) issued a call inviting small and medium sized agri-enterprises to apply for match funding to support effective responses to and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. AgriFI’s COVID-19 Response and Recovery call sought to address both the challenges and opportunities which arose due to the changing business environment brought about by the pandemic.
This week’s case study showcases Instaveg Limited, thirteen months after receiving funds from the Covid -19 Response and Recovery call. Instaveg Limited is a horticultural processor operating in Kirinyaga county in Kenya. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and export opportunities dried up, Instaveg experienced a dramatic decline in sales by 75%. As a result, the company was forced to cease processing and significantly scale down its operations.
With support from AgriFI, the company has been able to secure and enhance the support it offers to out-growers and within 12 months managed to regrow its out-grower scheme from 69 to 310 smallholder farmers. Additionally, Instaveg has built its own new packhouse, added a refrigerated truck, a new efficient cold room and is installing new software that allows consumers to trace products from farm to fork.
