A series of case studies has been commissioned to explore the gender impacts from the EU funded AgriFI Kenya Challenge Fund programme. Presenting evidence from grantees and their smallholder farmer suppliers, the main objective was to understand women’s experiences following their integration into agricultural value chains, and to comprehend the initiatives taken by grantees to empower them. This month’s case study showcases the journey of PAEM Company Limited, a Kenyan agri-enterprise involved in processing and export of high-quality macadamia kernels. PAEM buys macadamia nuts from over 2,000 small scale farmers through eighteen buying and collection centres across major production areas of Kiambu, Murunga, Kirinyaga, Meru, and Embu Counties.
Through the grant, PAEM sought to integrate 10,000 macadamia farmers into its farmer development scheme, train them in good agricultural and climate-smart practices, and create job opportunities for women and youth in the field extension and post-harvest sector.
To date, PAEM has implemented various initiatives aimed at encouraging more women to participate in the macadamia value chain. Among other things, the organisation now employs female extension officers and provides on-farm training tailored to accommodate women’s domestic responsibilities. PAEM has also encouraged the formation of farmer groups, providing a platform for women to collectively access training, mentorship, and market information. These gender-sensitive approaches have increased women’s access to valuable agricultural knowledge and skills, leading to improved productivity and income.
