Imani Development managed a programme of work packages aimed at ‘Optimising carbon sequestration opportunities in community wealth building in Argyll and Bute’. This required local knowledge through our Scottish office of the Scottish Highlands and Islands, in particular Argyll & Bute region.
The project required in-depth learning and sense-checking with economic and environmental agencies, stakeholders including farmers and communities, and an ability to assimilate novel research and diverse strategic objectives at pace. The programme found that Argyll & Bute is rich in carbon stocks needing protection yet has huge carbon sequestration potential. This must be done in ways that maximise economic benefit as well as carbon sequestration. However, these are not mutually exclusive, but require core economic development interventions to ensure communities get balanced growth with high quality social and biodiversity outcomes.
