The Malawi Value Chains (MVC) project is a five-year (2023–2028) initiative funded by the UK FCDO with a dedicated budget of £13 million, implemented by Adam Smith International (ASI). It aims to boost Malawi’s export sectors by strengthening macadamia, mango, and mining value chains, focusing on improving productivity, quality, and market access for both enterprises and smallholder cooperatives. The project takes a holistic approach by addressing supply, demand, and ecosystem challenges to drive sustainable growth and is part of the broader Malawi Trade and Investment Programme (MTIP), which has a total budget of £95 million.
Imani Consultants Ltd was commissioned by Adam Smith International (ASI) to conduct the 2026 impact assessment of the Macadamia and Mango Value Chains under the Malawi Value Chains (MVC) project. The 2026 impact assessment aimed to assess progress and outcomes of MVC initiatives across mid-sized farms (MSFs), labourers engaged in MSFs and estates, and smallholder farmers (SHFs) within the macadamia and mango value chains. This involved collecting and analysing data from a sample of 21 macadamia and 31 mango MSFs participating in MVC initiatives; labour force survey involving 60 general workers from estates and MSFs (both value chains); and survey of 100 macadamia SHFs within the Sable Farming Scheme. The firm also conducted the 2025 impact assessment and a baseline survey under this project in 2024.
